Spotlight on the USO @ Camelot

Friday, 13 January 2012,  8:00pm

Camelot Theatre Company presents “Spotlight on the USO,” starring the Southern Oregon Jazz Orchestra and narrated by Shirley Patton.

From it‘s establishment during the big band era in the early 40‘s, through the years of change in the 60‘s and up until the present, the USO (United Service Organizations) brought America and the boys (and girls) overseas entertainment, hope and a “home away from home” during the most challenging of times. Celebrities offered their services often at great risk to themselves. Live performances, known as Camp Shows, attracted movie stars, comedians, musicians, singers and dancers, including Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, The Andrew Sisters, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Robin Williams and Willie Nelson.

Camelot’s production of “Spotlight on the USO” presents a fascinating look at the people who entertained, inspired and helped keep our troops going, both at home and abroad. Starring the Southern Oregon Jazz Orchestra (SOJO) and narrated by Shirley Patton,  “Spotlight on the USO”  celebrates this wonderful organization: the history, the music, the laughs and the tears!  Directed by Camelot Resident Artist Presila Quinby, the script by Peter Wickliffe features twenty-two big band songs, including “You Make Me Feel So Young,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “I Remember You” and “In the Mood.”

Says director Presila Quinby: “To me, the USO is the perfect response of a society to the nightmares of war.  The creation of the USO corresponded with a time in history when everyone wanted to serve in the war, in some way.  Only those old enough to remember the ravages of WWI were reluctant to some degree to be a part of WWII and those people were outside the age range needed for boots on the ground.  Once our nation was committed to this ‘War to end all wars,’ everyone did want to help clear the path to victory.  So in addition to the USO providing solace, entertainment and escape from the war to those actually serving, it also provided a way for those not serving to contribute in a special way. Inside each of us, I think, is a spark of that spirit.  And it is to the USO and to that spark that we pay tribute with this show. ”
